On the Sumy frontline, the "Christmas on the Frontline" project organized special events for Ukrainian defenders spending the holiday season on the battlefield. This initiative brought together chaplains, artists, and compassionate Ukrainians who sought to support our soldiers and remind them they are not alone, even in the most challenging times.
The main feature of the project was caroling and collective prayers that brought the spirit of Christmas to the frontlines. Chaplains sang traditional Ukrainian songs with the soldiers, evoking memories of family warmth and strengthening their faith in victory. In small improvised chapels or even under the open sky, the chaplains conducted services, calling upon God for peace, strength, and protection for our defenders.
“When we were singing, many of the soldiers had tears in their eyes. This isn’t just a holiday—it’s faith that light will conquer darkness. Christmas reminds us of what we are fighting for,” shared one of the chaplains.
In addition to spiritual support, the chaplains brought warm clothing, treats prepared by communities in the rear, and symbolic gifts such as charms and letters of encouragement from children across Ukraine.
These initiatives demonstrate that even in challenging times, the Ukrainian people remain strong and united. The role of the Church in supporting our defenders is vital: chaplains not only provide spiritual warmth but also help soldiers find the strength to continue their mission, reminding them of its profound meaning.
